Understanding Your Prescription

Single Vision Prescription Example

Single Vision Prescription

Single vision lenses correct one field of vision, either distance or near. These are the most common type of prescription glasses.

  • SPH (Sphere): The main power of the lens
  • CYL (Cylinder): The power needed for astigmatism
  • AXIS: The angle of astigmatism correction
DS Prescription Example

DS Prescription

Sometimes your prescription will only consist of a Sphere, so you only need to put this in on the prescription page. (Sometimes the optician writes DS in the cyl box, this just means that there is only a value for sphere)

Progressive Prescription Example

Progressive Prescription

Progressive lenses provide a seamless transition between distance, intermediate, and near vision without visible lines.

  • Distance: The top portion for distance vision
  • Intermediate: The middle portion for computer work
  • Near: The bottom portion for reading
Intermediate Prescription Example

Intermediate Prescription

Sometimes the reading add is incorporated into the sphere part of the prescription and is written out in full and will look something like this:

Your prescription will be in a Plus + or a minus - sphere and the cylinder can also be in a plus or a minus. It's very important that you put the correct symbol in the correct box. Don't worry, as if we see anything that looks irregular we will contact you prior to making your glasses.

Important Notes About Your Prescription

  • Prescriptions are typically valid for 2 years for adults and 1 year for children
  • Contact lens prescriptions are valid for 1 year
  • Your PD (Pupillary Distance) measurement is crucial for proper lens alignment
  • We recommend regular eye examinations to ensure your prescription remains accurate
